Oleocanthal research | What human studies really show

For me, oleocanthal is one of the most fascinating ingredients in extra virgin olive oil.

Not because I want to turn it into a miracle molecule.

But because oleocanthal is a great example of how science works.

The compound became internationally known in 2005, when researchers in the lab observed an inhibition of the cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2.

This was followed by studies on inflammatory pathways, platelets, neurobiological mechanisms, tumor cells, metabolism, and bioavailability.

For a long time, however, much of this literature consisted of cell and animal models.

Today, the situation is more interesting.

There are now also human studies involving olive oils rich in oleocanthal or rich in both oleocanthal and oleacein.

This is an important step forward.

But it does not mean, by any stretch:

Oleocanthal treats diseases.

Or:

The more oleocanthal an olive oil contains, the greater its health impact automatically becomes.

In this article, I therefore want to do something that is particularly important to me at Green Agora:

not speak less about research.

But speak more precisely.

What was shown in the lab?

What was actually studied in humans?

What does the pungency in the throat tell us?

What can a laboratory analysis answer?

And where does science end and an impermissible health claim begin?

Oleocanthal | The most important answers first

What is oleocanthal? Oleocanthal is a phenolic secoiridoid compound that is characteristic of native olive oil and is researched particularly for its throat irritation and biological properties.
Does oleocanthal cause the pungency? Oleocanthal is closely linked to the characteristic irritation in the throat. However, the total bitterness and pungency of an olive oil are not determined by oleocanthal alone.
Can you taste oleocanthal and thus measure it? No. Sensory analysis can provide clues. Only a suitable chemical analysis provides an exact oleocanthal value.
Are there human studies? Yes. There are now several small- to medium-sized human studies on oils rich in oleocanthal or in both oleocanthal and oleacein. However, the data set is significantly smaller than the preclinical research.
Is oleocanthal natural ibuprofen? No. Similar COX target structures were observed in the lab. This does not make oleocanthal the same as ibuprofen, either pharmacologically or clinically.
Is high-phenolic olive oil its own grade? No. Extra virgin olive oil is a legally defined grade. "High-phenolic," by contrast, describes an analytical or commercial context and is not an additional legal grade of olive oil.
Does a lot of oleocanthal automatically permit the EU Health Claim? No. The EU claim is not an oleocanthal claim. The legal analytical requirements must be met and verified for the specific oil in question.
Is more oleocanthal automatically better? Not as a general rule. Oleocanthal is an interesting analytical property. Quality, sensory characteristics, usage, and health significance cannot be reduced to a single number.
