Can dogs have olive oil?
Yes: Pure, unseasoned olive oil has been given orally to dogs in scientific studies. As an additional fat source, it can measurably alter the fatty acid composition in serum and skin.
Olive oil is rich in oleic acid. Extra virgin olive oil also contains natural accompanying substances such as tocopherols, sterols, squalene, and phenolic compounds. This makes it nutritionally and scientifically interesting.
The more important second question is:
Does a healthy dog need olive oil daily?
Usually not, if they are fed a complete diet that meets their requirements. A complete food is designed to provide the necessary nutrients in the overall ration. Additional oil primarily provides fat and energy and alters the fatty acid composition of the ration.
Direct canine research is limited, but not non-existent. A controlled study showed that olive oil alters the fatty acid profiles in serum and skin. In a small study of twelve healthy male dogs, an increase in progressive sperm motility was also observed with a high-phenolic EVOO.
These findings are positive and scientifically interesting. However, they do not prove a general effect on coat, immune system, brain, or digestion, and they do not yield a universal daily dose for dogs.
For this reason, this Green Agora article clearly distinguishes between what has actually been studied in dogs, the specific nutritional needs of different life stages and illnesses, and statements that cannot be derived from the existing evidence.

What is actually positively proven regarding olive oil for dogs?
The direct state of canine research on olive oil is limited. However, it is not non-existent.
Three points can be stated positively and precisely:
- Olive oil measurably influences fatty acid metabolism. In a controlled study with Beagle puppies, olive oil supplementation led to changes in the fatty acid composition in serum and skin. Among other things, oleic acid increased in both tissues.
- High-phenolic EVOO possesses a direct positive specific finding. In a study with twelve healthy male dogs, progressive sperm motility increased over time in the group with higher polyphenol content.
- Olive oil is a clearly characterizable source of fat. Its fatty acid profile is dominated by oleic acid; extra virgin olive oil also contains a natural accompanying fraction including tocopherols, sterols, squalene, and phenolic compounds.
The practical significance is clear: olive oil is not a nutritionally insignificant food for dogs. It can cause measurable biological changes.
The limit is equally clear: the existing studies do not justify a blanket statement that every dog needs olive oil daily or that a high polyphenol value automatically improves skin, coat, immune system, brain, or digestion.
Positive evidence and limited scope can be true at the same time.
The most important point | A complete feed is already a calculated overall ration
When it comes to humans, we often think in terms of individual foods.
For dogs, a different perspective is important.
A complete food is formulated in such a way that, when fed as intended, it provides the necessary nutrients for the respective life stage.
The current 2025 FEDIAF guidelines cover, among other things:
- Protein
- Fat
- Linoleic acid
- Minerals
- Vitamins
- Certain omega-3 fatty acids for growth and reproduction
If we now regularly add olive oil to the feed, we change two things:
energy intake
and:
the nutrient ratio of the overall ration.
This does not mean that every drop is problematic.
It means:
A supplement should have a reason.
How much olive oil for dogs? | Why blanket teaspoon tables do not work
Dosage tables based on the following pattern often circulate on the internet:
- small dog up to 10 kg | up to half a teaspoon daily
- medium dog | up to one teaspoon daily
- large dog | up to one and a half teaspoons daily
There is no reliable scientific basis for such general dosages.
Body weight alone is not enough for this either.
Two dogs with the same weight can have very different energy requirements.
Relevant factors include, for example:
- Age
- Neutering status
- Activity
- Body condition
- Breed
- Temperature and environment
- Health status
- Type of main feed
The WSAVA explicitly points out that individual energy requirements can differ significantly from general estimates.
Weight class is not an olive oil dosage.
A teaspoon is not calorically small for a small dog
Olive oil is almost pure fat.
According to USDA data, a tablespoon of olive oil weighs approximately 13.5 g.
A teaspoon therefore roughly corresponds to one-third of that and provides approximately:
40 kilocalories.
For comparison:
The WSAVA recommends that treats and other additional foods should together normally not make up more than approximately:
10 percent of daily energy intake.
In the WSAVA sample table, these 10 percent for an average healthy adult dog correspond to approximately:

This table is expressly not a feeding recommendation for olive oil.
It only shows why a seemingly small amount of oil can be calorically relevant for a small dog.
What does olive oil actually provide to the dog?
Olive oil mainly provides fat.
Characteristic is its high proportion of:
oleic acid.
Oleic acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid.
Olive oil also contains smaller proportions of other fatty acids, including linoleic acid and very small amounts of alpha-linolenic acid.
Extra virgin olive oil can also contain a small accompanying fraction including:
- tocopherols
- sterols
- squalene
- phenolic compounds
This is chemically interesting.
But:
The chemical peculiarity of a bottle does not yet answer the question of whether the dog actually needs this specific supplement.

Essential Fatty Acids | Why oleic acid is not the whole story
The dog requires certain fatty acids through its diet.
For the skin, in particular:
linoleic acid
is important.
The current FEDIAF guidelines explicitly include linoleic acid in the nutrient recommendations for complete dog food.
The Merck Veterinary Manual lists linoleic acid and linolenic acid as particularly important essential fatty acids for the skin homeostasis of dogs and cats.
Although olive oil does contain linoleic acid.
Its characteristic focus is on oleic acid.
Therefore, the statement:
Olive oil provides the crucial fatty acids for skin and coat
is too inaccurate.
Skin and Coat | What do direct studies with olive oil show?
This is where it gets particularly interesting because actual canine research does not match the usual marketing story.
In 1992, a controlled study examined twelve Beagle puppies.
The dogs received either:
- sunflower oil
- olive oil
- no additional oil supplementation
for twelve weeks.
As expected, the oils changed the fatty acid composition in serum and skin.
But the study did not show:
Olive oil makes the coat shinier or treats skin problems.
It showed primarily:
A fat source can change the fatty acid composition of tissues.
That is something different than a clinical skin benefit.
Olive oil was even used as a comparison or placebo in atopy studies
The distinction becomes even clearer in older clinical studies on atopic dogs.
In a randomized, double-blind study from 1992, dogs whose symptoms had previously been controlled with a combination of evening primrose oil and fish oil were partially switched to olive oil.
Of ten dogs that switched to olive oil, eight worsened.
The authors concluded that olive oil was not an effective therapeutic agent for controlling canine atopy.
Another placebo-controlled study from 1999 used olive oil as a control treatment.
The dogs in the olive oil group showed no significant clinical improvement, while certain skin scores improved in the groups with borage seed oil and fish oil.
This does not mean:
Olive oil causes skin diseases.
It means:
We should not sell olive oil as a specific skin and coat therapy.
Which fatty acids are better studied for skin and coat?
For certain dermatological issues, essential fatty acids and especially omega-3 fatty acids have been investigated much more specifically.
A randomized, double-blind study from 2020 examined dogs with poor coat quality.
The supplementation contained:
- EPA
- DHA
and was given over 90 days.
The Merck Veterinary Manual also describes essential fatty acids as a possible complementary therapy for certain inflammatory skin diseases.
But even here, the following applies:
The selection and dosage should match the specific dog and diagnosis.
Olive oil cannot simply be equated with fish oil or a veterinary-formulated EFA supplement.
Puppies and Brain Development | DHA is more decisive here than olive oil
The old version of this article generally claimed that fats from olive oil could contribute to normal brain development in puppies.
This statement is too unspecific.
The current FEDIAF guideline describes a much more concrete fatty acid:
DHA | Docosahexaenoic acid.
DHA and arachidonic acid are concentrated in the brain and retina during pregnancy and early development.
FEDIAF also points out that the ability of puppies to convert alpha-linolenic acid into DHA is severely limited after weaning.
Therefore, small amounts of:
EPA plus DHA
are considered in complete feeds for growth and reproduction.
A study with 48 Beagle puppies showed improvements in various learning, memory, psychomotor, and retinal parameters with DHA-rich fish oil feeding.
This is DHA research.
Not olive oil research.
Older Dogs and Cognition | Also, do not confuse olive oil with MCT here
In older dogs, there is interesting nutritional research on cognitive function.
The following were specifically investigated:
- medium-chain triglycerides | MCT
- Omega-3 fatty acids
- certain antioxidant combinations
- complex therapeutic diets
A controlled study with older dogs, for example, showed cognitive improvements through a diet enriched with MCT.
A systematic review from 2025 also describes MCT and Omega-3 fatty acids as interesting approaches for aging dogs.
Olive oil, by contrast, consists predominantly of long-chain triglycerides and is not a source of MCT.
Therefore, the claim:
Olive oil supports cognitive function in senior dogs
is not supported by this MCT research.
Polyphenols in dogs | How much direct research is there really?
In humans, there is now extensive research on olive oil, the Mediterranean diet, and phenolic compounds.
In dogs, the direct evidence is much smaller.
This is one of the most important findings of this research.
There are individual studies.
But they answer very specific questions.
2018 | A positive specific finding on high-phenolic EVOO in twelve healthy male dogs
A 2018 study examined twelve clinically healthy male dogs of various breeds.
Two extra virgin olive oils with different polyphenol contents were compared. The dogs received:
1 ml of oil per 3 kg of body weight daily
for 90 days.
The clearest positive finding was:
Progressive sperm motility increased significantly in the high-phenolic group over the course of the study.
Other parameters examined provided a more nuanced picture. No corresponding group differences were found for several other sperm kinetic parameters and the measured antioxidant potential; measured ROS values were higher in the high-phenolic group.
This is a genuinely positive finding, but it is a narrow endpoint in a very small study.
It does not automatically prove:
- better skin
- shinier fur
- better digestion
- better brain function
- a stronger immune system
- a generally optimal daily dose of EVOO for dogs
The correct statement is therefore: High-phenolic EVOO has been directly investigated in dogs and showed an interesting positive specific finding. This study is not sufficient for a general canine nutritional guideline.
2024 | Olive fruit meal is also not the same as olive oil
Another recent study examined 30 dogs.
However, the intervention did not consist of EVOO.
What was used was:
deoiled olive fruit meal.
After supplementation, changes in certain oxidative blood markers were observed.
This is interesting.
But:
A deoiled olive byproduct is not a bottle of olive oil.
It has a different matrix and a different composition.
This study should therefore not be used as evidence that high-phenolic culinary olive oil has the same effect in dogs.
2025 | An olive oil derivative is also not equivalent to EVOO
In 2025, a randomized, placebo-controlled study on 27 overweight dogs was published.
The study investigated a mixture of certain:
N-acylethanolamines derived from olive oil.
After three months, changes in various inflammatory, oxidative, liver, and heart parameters were reported.
This research is also interesting.
But it investigates:
a standardized derivative.
Not:
ordinary or high-phenolic EVOO from the grocery store.
A derivative is not a bottle.
2025 | A preliminary study on plant oils and feed reactions also urges caution
A preliminary study published in 2025 analyzed 459 dogs from dermatological examinations.
14.16 percent of the dogs received supplemental plant oils.
Among these oil supplements, extra virgin olive oil was the most frequent.
Oil supplements were documented more frequently in dogs with adverse food reactions or a combination of food reaction and atopic dermatitis.
However, the authors found:
no significant correlation between the specific type of oil and the diagnosis.
The study is observational and cannot prove a cause-and-effect relationship.
It is therefore not an argument that:
olive oil causes allergies.
But it shows once again:
Additional oils for skin problems should not be automatically viewed as a harmless universal therapy.
Polyphenols | Scientifically relevant, but human health claims remain human health claims
Oleocanthal, oleacein, hydroxytyrosol, and tyrosol are among the substances that make extra virgin olive oil scientifically particularly interesting.
In the context of human nutrition, the evidence regarding olive oil polyphenols is so concrete that the European Union explicitly permits the following health claim for suitable olive oils:
Olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress.
The claim is subject to defined conditions: The olive oil must provide at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20 g of olive oil; furthermore, it must be noted that the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 20 g of olive oil.
This is a strong positive statement in the correct scientific and legal context.
For dogs, however, it cannot simply be adopted. A dog is not a small human, and differences exist in areas such as nutrient requirements, metabolism, dosage, food composition, and clinical endpoints.
The European olive oil polyphenol health claim is therefore:
a regulated food claim for humans, not a veterinary therapeutic claim or a dosage recommendation for dogs.
This does not downplay the positive human evidence. It only clearly separates it from the much smaller direct canine research.
Vitamin E | Also no automatic canine effect from the bottle
Extra virgin olive oil can contain tocopherols or vitamin E.
But here, too, the overall ration is decisive.
A complete dog food is formulated with a view to the total vitamin requirement.
The Merck Veterinary Manual also points out that fat and fat-soluble vitamins must be considered together within a complete diet.
Therefore, the statement:
Olive oil provides antioxidants and therefore protects the dog's cells
should not be derived from a human health claim.
Such animal-related product effects require their own scientific evidence.
Olive oil for constipation | Not an established home remedy for dogs
On the internet, olive oil is frequently recommended as a natural remedy for constipation in dogs.
The direct canine evidence for this is weak.
An older experimental study on various oral laxatives used olive oil in dogs as a control treatment.
In this study, olive oil showed:
no significant stimulating effect on the colonic motility complexes investigated.
This also does not prove that a small amount of oil never affects the stool of an individual dog.
But it does not justify a general therapy recommendation.
Constipation can have various causes.
For example:
- dehydration
- foreign bodies
- pain
- orthopedic problems
- prostate diseases
- neurological diseases
- diseases of the colon
- medications
