High-phenolic olive oil for the skin? | Research, skin barrier and limits
Is high-phenolic olive oil automatically the best choice for skincare?
No.
This is precisely where Green Agora must draw a clear line between an exceptional food quality and dermatologically or cosmetically researched skincare.
Extra virgin olive oil contains an interesting mix of fatty acids and natural accompanying substances. These include, among others, oleic acid, squalene, tocopherols, and various phenolic compounds.
This composition is scientifically exciting.
But it does not automatically follow that:
- the higher the polyphenol value, the better it is for the skin
- a high-phenolic cooking oil is a better face cream
- oleocanthal or oleacein from a food analysis act on the skin in the same way as in a specially developed cosmetic formulation
- an extra virgin olive oil is suitable for every skin barrier
Research is significantly more nuanced.
Some clinical investigations show interesting effects of olive oil or olive-based ingredients on healthy skin or in specific formulations.
Other studies show that repeated application of olive oil can impair the skin barrier under certain conditions, especially in the case of skin that is already sensitive, dry, or atopic.
That is why I do not want to explain in this Green Agora guide which of our high-phenolic olive oils you should put on your face.
I want to explain what research has actually investigated and why a food product is not automatically a cosmetic skincare product.

The most important difference | Food quality is not cosmetic quality
A high-quality extra virgin olive oil can be exceptional as food.
It can:
- show a particular olive variety
- possess a distinct sensory profile
- achieve high analyzed phenol values
- contain oleocanthal and oleacein in interesting concentrations
- come from an especially early harvest
But these features primarily answer a question about:
olive oil as food.
A cosmetic formulation answers different questions.
For example:
- How does the product behave on the skin?
- Is the formulation stable?
- What is its tolerability?
- How does it change transepidermal water loss?
- Which ingredients are actually available at the desired site of action?
- How do different skin conditions react?
- How safe is repeated application?
An excellent food is not automatically an excellently formulated cosmetic.
What is inside extra virgin olive oil?
The largest part of olive oil consists of triacylglycerols or triglycerides.
Characteristic is, in particular, the high proportion of:
oleic acid.
In addition, extra virgin olive oil contains a smaller fraction of accompanying substances.
These can include, among others:
- squalene
- tocopherols
- sterols
- pigments
- volatile aromatics
- phenolic compounds
These accompanying substances are interesting for research and product characterization.
However, their mere presence does not prove a specific cosmetic effect on human skin.

Why oleic acid plays a special role in skincare
Oleic acid is a nutritionally characteristic component of olive oil.
On the skin, the scientific context is different.
Certain unsaturated fatty acids can influence the structure of the stratum corneum (horny layer).
Oleic acid is therefore investigated in pharmaceutical research as, among other things, a so-called:
penetration enhancer
.
This already shows:
A property that may be interesting for the transport of certain active ingredients does not automatically have to be favorable for an already damaged skin barrier.
Oleic acid as a component of food and oleic acid in external application are two different scientific contexts.
2013 | A small study showed an impairment of the skin barrier
A frequently cited study on this topic comes from Danby and colleagues.
A total of 19 adult volunteers with and without a history of atopic dermatitis were examined in two randomized, forearm-controlled trials.
Over several weeks, olive oil or, in one test arm, sunflower oil was repeatedly applied to defined skin areas.
After four weeks, the repeated application of olive oil showed, among other things:
- a significant reduction in the integrity of the stratum corneum
- slight redness
Sunflower oil better maintained the integrity of the stratum corneum in this trial and increased hydration.
The authors therefore warned against the uncritical use of olive oil on dry or atopic skin and during baby massage.
The study was small.
It does not answer every question about skincare.
But it shows why the simple claim is problematic:
Natural olive oil is automatically good for every skin barrier.
2019 | A dermatological review was also cautious regarding dry and atopic skin
A review article from 2019 looked at the use of:
- olive oil
- coconut oil
- sunflower oil
for xerosis and atopic dermatitis, with a special focus on children.
The authors came to the assessment that the evidence available at the time indicated that olive oil could worsen xerosis and atopic dermatitis.
That does not mean that every healthy person gets skin problems after a single contact with olive oil.
It means:
In the case of an already compromised skin barrier, traditional use should not become a blanket therapy recommendation.
2022 | Why the skin condition is decisive
An extensive review article on plant oils and butters summarized 27 clinical studies with 17 different plant oils or fats.
The authors distinguished particularly between:
unaffected skin
and:
inflamed or barrier-compromised skin.
On inflamed skin, plant oils with a high proportion of oleic acid and comparatively little linoleic acid can additionally impair the structure of the stratum corneum.
Unaffected skin, on the other hand, does not have to show the same negative reaction.
Frequency and duration of application also play a role.
This is a much better classification than:
Olive oil is good for the skin.
Or:
Olive oil is bad for the skin.
The scientifically more meaningful question is:
Which skin | which product | which formulation | which duration | which goal?
2025 | A study on healthy skin shows a more nuanced picture
A randomized study published in 2025 examined extra virgin olive oil compared to petrolatum on healthy skin.
54 healthy adults completed the study.
In this experimental setup, both EVOO and petrolatum increased the hydration of the stratum corneum. Furthermore, changes in other examined skin parameters were observed.
Petrolatum additionally reduced transepidermal water loss and showed an overall stronger occlusive effect.
This is important.
Because it shows:
Research on olive oil on the skin is not completely one-dimensional.
On healthy skin, with a different study design and a different application duration, different results can be observed than with repeated application or with a compromised skin barrier.
This is precisely why no single study should be turned into a universal judgment on skincare.
What does transepidermal water loss mean?
The term:
transepidermal water loss | TEWL
describes, in simplified terms, how much water is lost to the environment through the skin.
TEWL is frequently used as one of several parameters to assess the function of the skin barrier.
Certain skincare formulations can contribute to influencing water loss.
But:
Oil does not literally provide water to the skin.
It can form a lipid film and influence water loss and skin feel.
Therefore, the widely used phrase:
Olive oil moisturizes
is a major oversimplification.
Polyphenols on the skin | This is where the research gets interesting
Now we come to the area that most frequently leads to misunderstandings with high-phenolic olive oils.
Oleocanthal.
Oleacein.
Hydroxytyrosol.
Tyrosol.
These and other compounds are also studied in dermatological and cosmetic contexts.
But we have to look closely:
Was a finished cooking olive oil studied?
Or:
an isolated or standardized substance in a specially developed formulation?
Scientifically, that is not the same thing.
2024 | Oleocanthal and oleacein in a specially developed serum formulation
A clinical study from the year 2024 investigated a:
1% serum formulation with oleocanthal and oleacein.
70 people took part in the randomized study.
The serum was applied twice daily over 30 days.
However, the investigated formulation did not consist of a bottle of olive oil.
Besides oleocanthal and oleacein, it contained further ingredients of a formulated skincare product.
The study reported changes in measured wrinkle parameters in several participant groups.
That is scientifically interesting.
But it does not follow that:
A culinary olive oil with an especially high oleocanthal value has the same effect.
Why not?
Because the concentration, carrier system, distribution, stability, and skin bioavailability of a developed formulation create different conditions than a cooking oil.
A study with a formulated serum is not a study with a bottle of EVOO.
2026 | Hydroxytyrosol is also investigated in formulated skin products
A study published in 2026 investigated an oil-in-serum formulation with an olive extract standardized to hydroxytyrosol.
The study addressed post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and examined not only stability and sensory properties but also clinical skin parameters.
After the application phase, changes were described in, among other things:
- hydration of the stratum corneum
- transepidermal water loss
- color differences in the examined skin areas
This investigation is also interesting.
But again:
A developed formulation with a standardized extract was studied.
Not:
any high-phenolic culinary olive oil.
A high total polyphenol value does not tell you how a product acts on the skin
At Green Agora, we deal intensively with:
- total phenols
- oleocanthal
- oleacein
- tyrosol derivatives
- hydroxytyrosol derivatives
This analytics helps us to better understand an olive oil as a food.
But from a value such as:
500 mg/kg
or:
2,000 mg/kg
one cannot derive a cosmetic dosage or efficacy.
There is no scientifically established skincare scale such as:

Why Pamako Gold is not automatically the best skincare oil
This point is particularly important to me for Green Agora.
As a food product, Pamako Gold can possess an exceptional phenolic profile.
That makes the bottle analytically highly interesting.
But it does not mean that:
- Pamako is automatically the best facial oil application
- Pamako reduces wrinkles
- Pamako treats redness
- Pamako is suitable for treating atopic dermatitis (eczema)
- more oleocanthal automatically means a better skin barrier
These conclusions are not supported by the available evidence.
A product deserves the right story.
With Pamako, the Tsounati variety, origin, production, sensory profile, and analytics are already interesting enough.

Olive oil for atopic dermatitis and very dry skin | Why caution is advisable
In the case of a compromised skin barrier, I would not recommend an edible olive oil as a general treatment.
There are scientific reasons for caution, especially regarding atopic dermatitis and pronounced xerosis.
The described studies and reviews show that the high oleic acid content, in particular, can be relevant for inflamed or barrier-compromised skin.
For such skin conditions, there are specifically developed:
- emollients
- barrier creams
- ointments
- other dermatological care and therapy products
whose composition is tailored to the respective application.
In the case of a skin disease, a food story should not replace dermatological treatment.
Olive oil for babies | Tradition is not enough as a recommendation
Baby massage with olive oil also has a long tradition.
Modern skin barrier research, however, requires more than tradition.
In a randomized pilot study, 115 healthy, full-term newborns were assigned for four weeks to a group using olive oil, sunflower oil, or no oil application.
In both oil groups, hydration increased, but at the same time, the structure of the lipid lamellae improved less than in the group without oil.
The study was not designed to provide definitive clinical recommendations.
The authors therefore recommended caution regarding general recommendations for oils on neonatal skin.
Baby skin has its own physiological peculiarities.
In case of doubt, skincare questions for infants should be discussed with a pediatrician or a dermatologically qualified professional.
Olive oil and wound care | Clinical research is not a blank check for home remedies
There are clinical studies in which topical olive oil applications were investigated in defined medical situations.
For example, a systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized studies examined the external application of olive oil for the prevention of pressure ulcers in at-risk patients.
Such data are scientifically interesting.
But it does not follow from this that you should:
Treat an open or chronic wound at home with edible olive oil.
Wounds can:
- be infected
- require professional cleaning
- require a special wound dressing
- be a symptom of a serious underlying condition
A clinically supervised study is not a guide for self-treatment.
Olive oil or coconut oil | A simple ranking would be too crude
Olive oil and coconut oil are frequently compared on the internet based on simple categories:
- comedogenicity
- absorption behavior
- antioxidants
- skin type
Such a ranking is scientifically problematic.
Plant oils have different fatty acid profiles, and clinical studies often investigate:
- different skin conditions
- different age groups
- different comparison products
- different application durations
For virgin coconut oil, for example, there are randomized investigations for certain skin conditions.
But that does not automatically make coconut oil the best skin oil for every person.
And a blanket comedogenicity value from an internet list is not a high-quality dermatological comparative study.
Skincare cannot be seriously reduced to a star rating for plant oils.
Acne and blemish-prone skin | No blanket recommendation
For acne-prone skin, I would not recommend pure edible olive oil as a general facial care product.
Acne is a complex disease of the sebaceous follicles.
Sensible skincare should, among other things, take into account:
- tolerability
- formulation
- other active ingredients used
- individual acne therapy
Anyone with severe or inflammatory acne should not rely on a DIY plant oil strategy.
Can olive oil dissolve makeup?
Oils can dissolve fat-soluble components of makeup.
That is chemically plausible.
But this does not create a universal recommendation to use edible olive oil as a daily facial cleanser.
A cosmetic oil cleanser is specifically developed with regard to:
- cleansing effect
- formulation
- application
- rinse-off capability
- tolerability
developed.
Similar basic chemistry does not mean identical product.
And what about hair and cuticles?
Olive oil can leave an oily film on hair fibers or cuticles, thereby altering the subjective feeling of smoothness and shine.
That is something different than:
promoting hair growth
or:
medically strengthening nails.
For such claims, the respective application would have to be scientifically investigated separately.
What does "high phenolic" actually mean in skincare?
In the olive oil trade:
High Phenolic
is frequently used for olive oils with high analyzed phenolic values.
However, this is not a separate European cosmetic quality class.
And there is also no legal quality class for food called:
High Phenolic olive oil for the skin.
The scientifically more sensible classification is:
A phenol-rich EVOO can contain chemically interesting molecules as a raw material.
Whether this results in an effective and suitable cosmetic product, however, also depends on:
- concrete compound
- concentration
- formulation
- stability
- skin bioavailability
- duration of use
- skin condition
- safety assessment
depends.
The EU health claim for olive oil polyphenols does not apply to skincare
Legally, too, two worlds must be kept separate.
For suitable food products, the following authorized claim exists in the European Union:
Olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress.
The claim may only be used under the conditions stipulated for it.
This claim concerns:
the consumption of a suitable olive oil as a food.
It is not proof that olive oil applied to the skin:
- protects skin cells
- reduces wrinkles
- treats redness
- improves atopic dermatitis
- prevents UV damage
A food health claim is not a cosmetic proof of efficacy.
EU health claim for olive oil | Requirements and laboratory testing
Vitamin E | Here, too, do not transfer nutritional law to skincare
Olive oil can contain tocopherols, or Vitamin E.
For Vitamin E, the following authorized claim exists in food law under the corresponding conditions:
Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
This statement, too, belongs in a nutritional regulatory context.
It must not simply be translated into the statement:
Olive oil on the skin protects skin cells from oxidative stress.
Cosmetic products are subject to their own requirements regarding safety, intended use, and advertising claims.
Food or cosmetic | Why the intended use is legally important
The European Cosmetics Regulation defines a cosmetic product, among other things, by its intended use.
A substance or mixture intended to be placed in contact with the various external parts of the human body, for example to:
- cleanse
- perfume
- change its appearance
- protect
- keep in good condition
- or correct body odors
generally falls under the regulatory scope of cosmetics.
This is important for Green Agora.
Our premium olive oils are offered as food.
We should therefore not pretend that the same bottles are simultaneously dermatologically developed cosmetic products.
A dedicated skincare line would be a separate product project with, among other things:
- defined cosmetic intended use
- suitable formulation
- safety assessment
- correct labeling
- the regulatory required responsibilities
Food and cosmetics should be communicated as strictly separate.
Extra virgin olive oil remains scientifically interesting nonetheless
The caution of this article does not mean that olive oil would be uninteresting for dermatology and cosmetics.
On the contrary.
Research is concerned with, among other things:
- squalene
- hydroxytyrosol
- oleocanthal
- oleacein
- oleuropein
- olive-based emulsions
- standardized extracts
- topical formulations
Precisely from this, interesting cosmetic and dermatological developments can arise.
The scientific path, however, is rather:
molecule → formulation → safety → clinical testing → concrete application.
Not:
high laboratory value in edible oil → automatically best skincare.
How would I practically classify it for skincare?
When it comes to a regular skincare routine, I would not look for the highest polyphenol value of an edible oil bottle.
I would first look at the skin condition and the intended purpose.
Healthy skin
Those who like oil-based skincare can fall back on appropriately formulated cosmetic products whose purpose and application are clearly defined.
Very dry or sensitive skin
Here, formulations tailored to the skin barrier are a more sensible starting point than a blanket DIY edible oil experiment.
Atopic dermatitis
Pure olive oil should not be recommended as a blanket treatment due to the barrier research described.
Acne
In the case of inflammatory or pronounced acne, skincare should fit the medical or dermatological treatment.
Open or chronic wounds
Do not treat independently with edible olive oil. Care depends on the type, cause, and severity of the wound.
Babies
No blanket recommendation for edible olive oil as a massage or care oil. Infant skin has special requirements.
Natural does not automatically mean skin-barrier-neutral.

Frequently asked questions about olive oil and skincare
Is olive oil good for the skin?
This cannot be answered with a general yes or no. In healthy skin, favorable changes in certain parameters have been observed in some studies. Other investigations show an impairment of the skin barrier with repeated application. Skin condition, product, and application are decisive.
Is high phenolic olive oil better for the skin?
There is no reliable evidence for a direct relationship between the total polyphenol value of an edible olive oil and a better cosmetic effect.
Are oleocanthal and oleacein good for the skin?
They are interesting research substances. A clinical study with a specially formulated serum formulation showed changes in investigated skin aging parameters. However, these data do not prove the same effect with direct application of a high-phenolic edible olive oil.
Can olive oil impair the skin barrier?
Yes. In certain studies, a deterioration in the integrity of the stratum corneum was observed after repeated application. Other investigations on healthy skin show more differentiated results.
Can EVOO influence skin hydration?
A study on healthy adults published in 2025 showed increased hydration of the stratum corneum. Petrolatum showed a stronger occlusive effect across multiple barrier parameters. Results depend on the study design and skin condition.
Is olive oil suitable for neurodermatitis?
Pure olive oil should not be recommended as a blanket treatment. Reviews and mechanistic studies give cause for caution in cases of atopic or barrier-disrupted skin.
Is olive oil suitable for very dry skin?
Even in the case of xerosis, a blanket recommendation is not justified. Skincare tailored to the specific skin condition is a more sensible starting point.
Can I apply olive oil to open wounds?
Edible olive oil should not be used as an independent self-treatment for open or chronic wounds. Clinical studies involving topical olive oil applications have taken place within defined medical contexts.
Is olive oil suitable for baby skin?
A general recommendation is not justified. Studies on the neonatal skin barrier give cause for a cautious assessment.
Is olive oil better than coconut oil?
Not universally. The oils have different fatty acid profiles and have been studied in different clinical situations.
Is olive oil comedogenic?
Simple lists of comedogenicity found on the internet are not a sufficient basis for an individual dermatological recommendation. For skin prone to blemishes, appropriately formulated skincare is more sensible.
Can olive oil remove makeup?
Oil can dissolve oil-soluble components of makeup. However, cosmetic cleansing products developed for this purpose are more clearly defined for regular facial cleansing.
Does olive oil protect the skin from UV radiation?
Olive oil is not a sunscreen and does not replace tested sun protection with a proven sun protection factor.
Does edible olive oil reduce wrinkles?
There is no reliable evidence of a general anti-wrinkle effect for edible olive oil applied directly. Interesting data exist for specially formulated products with olive-based ingredients.
Is olive oil with 2,000 mg of total polyphenols per kg better against wrinkles?
There is no reliable evidence for this.
Can I use Pamako Gold as a facial oil?
Green Agora sells Pamako Gold as a food product and does not recommend it as a cosmetic facial product. A high analyzed phenol value is a characteristic of the food product and not a cosmetic efficacy test.
Are Green Agora olive oils skincare products?
No. The premium olive oils in the Green Agora assortment are offered as food products and are not marketed as cosmetic products.

I am intensively involved with high-phenolic olive oils.
When I see values for:
Oleocanthal.
Oleacein.
Total phenols.
Hydroxytyrosol derivatives.
I find that fascinating.
But that is precisely why I have to be careful about what I make of these numbers.
A customer might buy an extraordinary Tsounati from me.
It would then be easy to say:
So many polyphenols must also be excellent for the skin.
But that is not a scientific conclusion.
On the skin, other questions come into play.
Oleic acid.
Skin barrier.
Formulation.
Stability.
Skin availability.
Skin condition.
Tolerance.
Suddenly, the number on the certificate of analysis is no longer sufficient.
And that is exactly what I find exciting.
A number can be extraordinary and still not answer every question.
If research shows that oleocanthal, oleacein, or hydroxytyrosol possess interesting properties in certain formulations, I want to understand that.
But I will not work backward from that to claim:
Then our most phenol-rich bottle of edible oil must be the best skincare.
For me, that would not be knowledge.
That would be marketing.
Analysis without the human element remains just a number. And a number without an application context can very quickly tell the wrong story.
