Olive oil has calories.

And quite a few, too.

A tablespoon containing approximately 15 ml can provide around:

124 kcal

.

This comes as a surprise to some people.

Especially when the conversation is simultaneously about Mediterranean cuisine, unsaturated fatty acids, polyphenols, and high-quality extra virgin olive oil.

For me, however, there is no contradiction here.

We just need to separate two different questions.

How much energy does olive oil provide?

And:

What is the quality of the specific olive oil I am using?

The calorie count answers the first question.

It does not automatically answer the second.

A premium olive oil can have practically the same calorific value as a much simpler olive oil.

A high-phenolic olive oil does not become low-calorie just because it contains a particularly large amount of phenolic compounds.

And a tablespoon is also not a particularly precise unit of measurement.

That is why we will take a closer look in this guide.

  • Salt: 0 g

The energy thus comes almost entirely from the fat.

The calculation according to the legal factor is:

91.6 g of fat times 9 kcal.

That equals:

824.4 kcal.

Rounded, this corresponds exactly to the stated order of magnitude.

This is a very clear example of how nutritional declarations are calculated.


Why do 3389 kJ and 824 kcal not result in exactly the same conversion?

This point can be confusing at first glance.

Anyone who converts 824 kcal into kJ using a general mathematical conversion factor will not get exactly 3389 kJ.

This does not automatically mean that the nutrition table is wrong.

The reason lies in the European calculation factors.

For fat, two fixed factors are provided in the Food Information Regulation:

  • 37 kJ per gram
  • 9 kcal per gram

With 91.6 g of fat, this results in approximately:

  • 3389 kJ
  • 824 kcal

The two values are therefore calculated using the respectively prescribed factors.


100 ml and 100 g of olive oil are not the same

This is a small distinction with a big impact.

100 ml

describes a volume.

100 g

describes a mass.

Olive oil has a different density than water.

Therefore, 100 ml of olive oil does not weigh 100 g.

In the current Creta Eleon nutritional declaration, per 100 ml:

91.6 g of fat

are stated.

Anyone comparing tables should therefore always look closely:

Does the information refer to 100 ml or 100 g?

Otherwise, different reference values are compared with each other.


20 g of olive oil and 20 ml of olive oil are also not the same

This difference is particularly important.

At 824 kcal per 100 ml, 20 ml of olive oil provides approximately:

165 kcal.

20 g of fat, according to the legal factor of 9 kcal per gram, provides approximately:

180 kcal.

Why?

Because:

Grams measure mass.

Milliliters measure volume.

Both units should not simply be equated.


20 g of olive oil are not automatically two tablespoons

This point is especially important when discussing the European claim regarding olive oil polyphenols.

If two foods have the same number of calories, that does not mean that their fatty acid composition is identical.

A high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids is characteristic of olive oil.

The authorized statement on oleic acid | Why replacing the word is important

There is an authorized European health claim for oleic acid.

The official wording is:

“Replacing saturated fats in the diet with unsaturated fats contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. Oleic acid is an unsaturated fat.”

This statement may only be used for foods that meet the requirements for a high content of unsaturated fatty acids.

The decisive word is:

replacing.

The statement does not mean:

An already high-energy diet remains unchanged and as much olive oil as possible is added on top.

It is about replacing saturated fatty acids with unsaturated fatty acids within the diet.

Olive oil is a high-energy source of fat.

The composition of the fat is a different question than the calorie amount.

I would phrase the question differently.

Not:

But:

How does the amount used fit into the total energy intake?

What happens to the calories when heating?

When cooking or frying, the calories in olive oil do not simply disappear.

If you add 15 ml of olive oil to a dish and eat all the oil later, its energy basically remains part of the dish.

However, when frying:

But the next question for me should not automatically be:

How can I avoid olive oil?

But:

What quantity do I use and which olive oil do I want to use for it?

A mild oil for the daily kitchen.

A more intensive premium olive oil for pure tasting.

A specific olive variety.

A large container for regular use.

Or a special bottle for conscious tasting.

These are different needs.

The calories remain roughly the same.

The world of olive oil behind them does not.

Calories tell me how much energy is on the spoon.
