Olive Oil for Athletes | Properly Classifying Energy, Performance, Recovery, and Polyphenols
Does extra virgin olive oil fit into a sports-oriented diet?
Yes.
But not because olive oil is a natural performance booster, a recovery agent, or a substitute for standard sports nutrition.
First and foremost, olive oil is an energy-dense food and a plant-based source of fat. For athletes, this energy density can be practically useful or something to be consciously portioned, depending on training goals. As part of a needs-based diet, olive oil can help shape the fat quality, flavor, and culinary structure of meals. However, for immediate athletic performance, other factors remain closer to the training stimulus.
- adequate energy intake
- needs-based carbohydrate intake
- adequate protein intake
- fluids and electrolytes
- training
- recovery
- sleep
- individual tolerance
Also, current research on the Mediterranean diet for athletes is more interesting than simple advertising claims might suggest. Individual studies show positive signals. However, a recent meta-analysis of performance-oriented athletes found no statistically confirmed overall effect on athletic performance.
And a small randomized study that examined olive oil immediately before exertion also found no improvement in measured performance.
Therefore, my Green Agora perspective is:
Olive oil can fit very well into a sports diet.
But it is not a legal miracle supplement in a bottle.
In this guide, I explain what role fat really plays in sports, why carbohydrates and protein have different tasks, what we know about polyphenols and recovery, how dietary supplements should be categorized, and what the connection between olive oil and ancient athletes actually means.

The Strongest Positive Statement | Olive Oil Can Be Very Useful in Practical Sports Nutrition
If I want to explain olive oil for athletes, I don't need to turn it into a performance booster.
Its real role is interesting enough as it is.
Olive oil provides:
- concentrated energy
- predominantly unsaturated fatty acids
- an easily dosable fat source for meals
- a strong culinary connection to vegetables, legumes, rice, potatoes, pasta, and fish
- depending on the product, a characteristic phenolic and sensory profile
For an athlete with a very high energy requirement, the high energy density can be practical.
For an athlete in a weight-class sport, the same energy density can mean:
dosing consciously.
That is not a contradiction.
The same food can have different practical nutritional tasks depending on the training goal.
That is exactly where a real strength of olive oil lies.
Not in some invented performance promise.
Olive Oil Is Not a Performance Booster | What the Direct Study Really Shows
In sports, a food quickly turns into a performance promise.
A mechanism is found.
An interesting measurement value changes.
And suddenly it is said:
This food makes you faster or more enduring.
With olive oil, that would be going too far.
A small randomized crossover study examined acute olive oil intake in:
only seven participants.
They compared:
- olive oil
- palm oil
- placebo
The participants completed the same progressive maximal walking test on three separate occasions.
The researchers looked at, among other things, a specific metric for cardiorespiratory coordination.
An interesting signal appeared there.
But:
The measured athletic performance did not improve.
This study is useful for two reasons.
First:
It shows that olive oil can indeed be studied in a sports-physiological experimental model.
Second:
It shows why a changed special parameter does not automatically mean better performance.
A measurement value is not a finish line.
2025 Meta-Analysis | Mediterranean Diet for Performance-Oriented Athletes
Olive oil is a typical component of the Mediterranean diet.
Therefore, data on the Mediterranean diet is often applied directly to sports performance.
A systematic review with a meta-analysis published in 2025 examined exactly this question in performance-oriented and elite athletes.
Included were:
9 studies with a total of 192 participants.
The groups studied were predominantly male.
Five studies reported a correlation or influence of the Mediterranean diet on performance parameters.
Four of these reported positive results.
The pooled meta-analysis, however, showed:
no statistically confirmed overall effect on athletic performance.
The summarized standardized effect was practically zero.
The authors pointed to:
- few studies
- small sample sizes
- different types of sports
- heterogeneous study designs
- low to moderate quality of evidence
The positive classification remains:
The Mediterranean diet can be a very well-structured dietary pattern for athletes.
The limitation remains:
Current research does not prove a general performance-enhancing effect of the dietary pattern.
Why a Mediterranean Diet Can Still Be Interesting
A Mediterranean-oriented diet combines many food groups that can also be used sensibly in a sports-appropriate diet.
These include, among others:
- vegetables
- fruit
- legumes
- whole grain products
- nuts and seeds
- fish
- olive oil as an important fat source
Depending on the sport, training phase, and energy demand, however, this basic pattern must be adapted.
A marathon runner in an intense training week needs a different carbohydrate strategy than someone doing strength training three times a week.
An athlete in a weight-class sport is, in turn, in a different situation than a heavyweight endurance athlete with a very high energy turnover.
Therefore, there is no:
one single Mediterranean athlete diet.
There is a dietary pattern that must be adapted specifically to the sport.
What role does fat play in sports nutrition?
Fat is important for athletes.
But its role is often misrepresented.
The Sports Nutrition Working Group of the German Nutrition Society (DGE) clearly classifies the importance of fat for ambitious recreational and competitive athletes.
Compared to the importance of:
carbohydrates in endurance sports
and:
protein in strength sports
the amount of fat plays a rather subordinate role in immediate performance.
For ambitious recreational and competitive athletes, the DGE generally suggests a range of:
20 to 30 percent of energy from fat.
This range is not a personal requirement for every athlete.
It is a professional guideline.
Why athletes still need fat
Fat fulfills several important tasks.
It:
- provides concentrated energy
- provides essential fatty acids
- is relevant for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins
- is a component of numerous cell structures
- can contribute to meeting a high energy demand
During longer periods of exertion, the oxidation of fatty acids contributes to energy supply.
But it does not follow from this that:
the more fat an athlete eats, the higher their performance.
The body has large fat stores.
Nevertheless, athletic performance strongly depends on the intensity at which the body is working and how well carbohydrate availability matches the exertion.
Carbohydrates and olive oil do not have the same task
Especially in endurance sports, this distinction is crucial.
The DGE points out that during the oxidation of carbohydrates, both the energy yield per liter of oxygen and the energetic flow rate are higher than during the oxidation of fatty acids.
For intense exertion, carbohydrate availability is therefore of particular importance.
Olive oil can be part of the daily diet.
But it does not replace:
- muscle glycogen
- an appropriate carbohydrate intake before long or intense sessions
- a sports-specific carbohydrate strategy in competition
Olive oil is a fat source.
Not a liquid carbohydrate store.
Olive oil and strength sports | It does not provide muscle building blocks
In strength sports, too, olive oil should not be confused with protein.
Olive oil provides practically no protein.
It does not provide a relevant amount of essential amino acids.
And it does not provide leucine as a direct building block for muscle protein biosynthesis.

- sufficient total energy
- needs-based protein intake
- distribution of suitable protein sources throughout the day
- recovery
Olive oil can supplement a meal and provide additional energy when the energy requirement is high.
But:
Olive oil does not build muscle.
When olive oil can be practical for very high energy requirements
Some athletes require very high amounts of energy.
This can be relevant, for example, for extensive endurance training, daily multi-hour sessions, or large athletes with a high training volume.
Olive oil has a high energy density.
This makes it possible to make a meal higher in energy without significantly increasing its volume.
For example:
- over pasta
- with rice and vegetables
- with legumes
- over potatoes
- with fish
- in dressings
This can be practical.
But it is not a general advantage for every athlete.
Those who want to reduce weight or reach a specific weight class must take this high energy density into account just as much.
How many calories does olive oil provide?
Fat provides approximately:
9 kilocalories per gram.

Energy Availability | More Important for Athletes Than the Search for a Superfood
For athletes, it is not only important to ask:
How many calories does a food have?
Equally important is:
Is sufficient energy available to the body long-term in relation to training exertion?
The International Olympic Committee's consensus on Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport describes problematically low energy availability as a potential starting point for impairments to:
- health
- training response
- performance capability
- various physiological systems
This affects both female and male athletes.
Therefore, it can be just as problematic in sports to reflexively reduce fat significantly as it is to eat fat uncontrollably in addition to other foods.
Sports nutrition requires sufficient energy and a distribution of nutrients that suits the training goal.
For people with a high training volume, olive oil can be practical due to its energy density.
For targeted body weight reduction or weight classes, however, total energy requires particularly careful planning.
If there are signs of problematically low energy availability, the situation belongs in the hands of qualified sports medicine or sports nutrition professionals.
Olive oil before training | More is not automatically better
A large quantity of olive oil immediately before an intense session is not an established performance strategy.
Before training and competition, several questions are more important:
- How long will the exertion last?
- How intense is the training?
- How well is the meal tolerated?
- What is the carbohydrate requirement?
- How much time is there between the meal and the exertion?
Furthermore, a very high-fat meal can provide a considerable amount of energy without directly replenishing carbohydrate stores.
Therefore, I would not suddenly start drinking large amounts of olive oil as a performance ritual before an important competition.
Competition day is not the time for nutritional experiments.
Olive oil during training?
For typical intense training sessions and competitions, olive oil is not a common intra-workout food.
For longer periods of exertion, sports nutrition focuses more heavily on the following, depending on the situation:
- Fluids
- Electrolytes
- Carbohydrates
- Individual gastrointestinal tolerance
This does not mean that fat is fundamentally unimportant.
It means:
The right energy source depends on the timing and the exertion.
Olive oil after training | Part of a meal instead of a recovery supplement
After exertion, different priorities often take precedence, depending on the sport and training goal.
For example:
- Fluid replacement
- Electrolytes
- Protein for muscle protein synthesis and tissue repair
- Carbohydrates for replenishing glycogen stores
- Sufficient total energy
Olive oil can complement such a meal in terms of flavor and energy.

But this should not turn into:
Olive oil is proven to accelerate recovery.
For the finished food product "olive oil," such a general statement is not sufficiently substantiated.
Polyphenols, training, and recovery | An interesting field of research
Extra virgin olive oil can contain various phenolic compounds.
These include, or are precursors to, among others:
- Oleocanthal
- Oleacein
- Hydroxytyrosol
- Tyrosol
- Other secoiridoid derivatives
In sports, polyphenols are generally researched in relation to various questions.
These include:
- Oxidative stress
- Inflammatory markers
- Muscle soreness
- Recovery
- Mitochondrial signaling pathways
- Endurance performance
At first, this sounds very convincing.
But a biologically plausible mechanism is not yet a proven effect of a specific olive oil in athletes.
Mechanism does not equal clinical effect.
2025 | Olive-based polyphenols after exertion
A scoping review published in 2025 specifically examined olive-based polyphenols and exercise-related inflammatory responses.
The literature base was small.
The authors found:
7 relevant studies.
Across the included studies, on average approximately:
101 mg of olive-based polyphenols per day
for an average of approximately:
40 days
were used.
Hydroxytyrosol was the most frequently studied compound.
Some studies reported changes in:
- Oxidative stress
- Inflammatory markers
- Antioxidant defense systems
- Mitochondrial parameters
These figures are not a consumption recommendation.
They merely describe the interventions studied.
The most important point for Green Agora is:
An intervention with isolated or concentrated hydroxytyrosol is not automatically a study on extra virgin olive oil.
Food matrix.
Dose.
Co-compounds.
Bioavailability.
and product composition
all differ.
The authors themselves did not arrive at an established dosage or usage recommendation for athletes.
2026 | Polyphenols, recovery, and the antioxidant trap
A review article published in 2026 brings an important modern perspective into sports nutrition.
Polyphenols are often marketed as acting directly in the body as:
Antioxidants
The authors consider this simple model to be insufficient.
Instead, they discuss, among other things, signaling pathways related to:
- Nrf2
- NF kappa B
- Endogenous antioxidant systems
- Mitochondrial adaptations
- Fat oxidation
Many mechanistic effects are more clearly demonstrated in cell models than in humans.
Human studies on recovery and performance show partially positive, but overall inconsistent results.
The bioavailability of the original molecules also plays a role.
Therefore, the scientifically sound statement is:
Polyphenols are a relevant area of research in sports and recovery.
The equally important boundary is:
A high-phenolic olive oil is not, by virtue of that fact, a proven recovery or performance product.

More antioxidants in sports are not automatically better
Regarding the topic of sports and oxidative stress, another nuance is important.
Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species are not produced exclusively as harmful byproducts during physical exertion.
They are also involved in signaling pathways that help control training adaptations.
Therefore, the idea that:
The more antioxidants immediately around every training session, the better
is too simple.
High-dose, isolated antioxidant supplements, in particular, should not automatically be equated with a varied, plant-rich diet.
A food like extra virgin olive oil is part of a complex food matrix.
It is not a high-dose, isolated antioxidant.
The EU Health Claim for olive oil polyphenols is not a sports claim
For suitable olive oils, there is an authorized health-related claim in the European Union.
The official wording is:
"Olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress."
The claim may only be used for olive oil that contains at least:
5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20 g of olive oil
The regulation lists, among others, oleuropein complex and tyrosol as examples.
Additionally, consumers must be informed that the positive effect occurs with a daily intake of:
20 g of olive oil
This authorized claim relates to:
the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress.
It says nothing about:
- Faster recovery
- Muscle growth
- VO2max
- Endurance performance
- Strength
- Muscle soreness
- Sports injuries
A health claim is not a performance claim.
Also, a high total phenol or oleocanthal value alone is not automatically proof of the legally relevant amount of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives.
EU Health Claim for olive oil | Requirements and laboratory testing
Vitamin E | An authorized claim with an important condition
Extra virgin olive oil can contain vitamin E, or tocopherols.
For vitamin E, the following authorized statement exists in the European Union:
"Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress."
However, this statement may not be written on every food product as a blanket term.
The specific food must meet the legal requirements to be considered a source of vitamin E.
Therefore, at Green Agora, I would not automatically claim for every bottle:
This olive oil protects your cells through vitamin E.
First, the specific nutrient quantity and the basis for the declaration must be correct.
And even if the claim can be used, it does not say:
Vitamin E in olive oil improves athletic performance.
Extra virgin olive oil | What the quality grade really means
For a sports-oriented diet, not every bottle of olive oil is automatically the same.
Extra virgin olive oil is the highest legal quality grade among virgin olive oils.
According to European marketing standards, the following apply, among others:
- Free acidity of no more than 0.8 percent
- Defined limit values for other chemical quality parameters
- No sensory defects
- A perceptible fruitiness
Production is carried out exclusively using mechanical or other physical methods under conditions that do not alter the oil.
Important:
Extra virgin olive oil does not automatically mean cold-pressed.
The quality grade and the additional mention of "cold extraction" or "first cold pressing" are legally different things.
Extra virgin olive oil | Understanding quality grades and production
Pungency and bitterness | Not a performance indicator for athletes
An intense extra virgin olive oil can taste bitter and pungent.
Certain phenolic compounds contribute to these sensory perceptions.
But:
More pungency does not mean more athletic performance.
And:
A mild olive oil is not automatically worse for athletes.
The choice should also depend on:
- What dishes are being eaten
- What intensity one enjoys
- How frequently the oil is used
- Whether it is used for cooking or as a finish
Mild is not "less than" intense.
Nutritional supplements in sports | Food First, but not Food Only
A food-based primary diet should form the foundation.
But that does not mean:
Every supplement is useless.
The International Olympic Committee lists a few substances for which there can be solid evidence in specific application situations.

The German Nutrition Society (DGE) emphasized again at the end of 2025 that a balanced, varied, and need-based diet forms the basis in most cases, even in competitive sports, and that supplements should only be used after an individual risk-benefit assessment and, if possible, with expert guidance.
"Food First" means optimizing the basic diet first.
It does not mean ideologically excluding every supplement application that makes sense from a sports science perspective.
Nutritional supplements and anti-doping | The risk is real
The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) Germany points out that nutritional supplements can pose a doping risk.
Possible causes include, among others:
- Undeclared prohibited substances
- Contamination
- Production residues
- Differences between batches
NADA recommends a reflective approach and advises checking before consumption whether products have been independently tested for prohibited substances.
The Cologne List (Kölner Liste) can provide guidance in this regard.
But:
Even such testing can only reduce the risk.
It cannot completely eliminate it.
For athletes under anti-doping rules, this is particularly important because the responsibility for found prohibited substances can have significant sporting consequences.
Food First does not mean Food Only
I find the idea of a food-based foundation very convincing.
But even here, we should not fall into an extreme.
"Food First"
does not automatically mean:
Supplements are always bad.
It means, rather:
The basic diet should be right first.
After that, when there is a specific need, it can be checked whether a supplement makes sense.
For example, in cases of:
- Diagnosed nutrient deficiency
- Special athletic situations
- High training volume
- Practical problems with nutrient supply
- A well-researched ergogenic supplement
Ideally, this should be done with qualified professionals.
Olive oil does not replace this decision.
Olive oil in ancient sports | The history is truly fascinating
The connection between olive oil and sports is indeed historically extraordinary.
But different from what modern wellness stories sometimes tell.
Greek athletes often trained and competed naked.
Historical depictions and archaeological finds show that they rubbed their bodies with olive oil.
After training, the skin was scraped off with a:
Strigilis, or strigil
This external application of olive oil in the personal care of ancient athletes is well documented.
However, it does not prove any modern performance-enhancing effect through the consumption of olive oil.
History is not a clinical study.
Olive oil as a prize | The Panathenaic Games
Even more impressive is another historical connection.
At the Panathenaic Games in Athens, winners received special prize amphorae.
These amphorae contained olive oil from sacred olive groves in Attica.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes the standardized amphora as having:
a metretes, or approximately 42 quarts of olive oil.
This corresponds roughly to around:
40 liters.
Depending on the competition, winners could receive several such amphorae.
Olive oil was therefore:
Personal care | a valuable commodity | a prize | a cultural symbol.
That is historically strong enough.
We do not need to derive a modern claim from it, such as:
Ancient athletes knew about the performance-enhancing effect of olive oil polyphenols.
There is no corresponding historical or clinical proof for this.
And what about the phrase "A healthy mind in a healthy body"?
This phrase is often associated with ancient Greece and the Olympic Games.
The well-known Latin form:
Mens sana in corpore sano
actually originates from the Roman poet:
Juvenal.
It is not an original Greek athlete motto.
Here too, accuracy is worthwhile.
Tradition is fascinating.
But it should be told correctly.
How can olive oil practically fit into a sports diet?
The most sensible use for me is not:
Drinking olive oil as a sports supplement.
But rather:
Integrating olive oil as a food into complete meals.
For high energy needs
Olive oil can make meals more energy-dense without significantly increasing their volume.
This can be practical for athletes with a very high energy expenditure.
Before training
Olive oil can naturally be part of a well-tolerated meal.
The closer an intense workout approaches, the more important individual tolerance, carbohydrate availability, and the total size of the meal become.
After training
Olive oil can complement a recovery meal.
Depending on the strain, protein, carbohydrates, fluids, electrolytes, and sufficient total energy remain the more immediate priorities.
In daily training life
Olive oil is very easy to integrate into:
- Rice
- Potatoes
- Pasta
- Vegetables
- Legumes
- Fish
- Salads
very easily.
As a finish
An intense premium olive oil can deliver a lot of aroma even with a consciously used amount.
That is a real strength of high-quality olive oils.
Taste and culinary versatility.
Not an invented performance boost.
Which olive oil for athletes?
There is no scientifically proven:
best athlete's olive oil.
I would therefore not create a ranking according to the pattern:
highest polyphenol value = best athletic performance.
Other questions make more sense for the selection:
- How often is olive oil used?
- Which dishes are being cooked?
- How intense is the oil allowed to taste?
- Is it used mainly raw, for cooking, or as a finish?
- Which container size matches the consumption?
- Are olive variety and laboratory analytics of interest?
An olive oil that is used regularly and appropriately with meals can be more sensible in everyday life than an analytically extreme bottle that doesn't suit the person's taste.
The person eats the meal.
Not the table.
