Can regular olive oil consumption be linked to a longer and healthier life?

What do large-scale long-term studies show?

What role does the Mediterranean diet play?

And what can we actually learn from Ikaria, Gökçeada, Muğla, and the so-called Blue Zones?

Research is now providing remarkably positive evidence.

Large prospective studies link higher olive oil consumption to lower all-cause mortality.

Meta-analyses are arriving at comparable results.

In older adults, a stronger adherence to Mediterranean dietary patterns is also associated with more favorable long-term health outcomes.

Furthermore, higher intake of various polyphenols through the overall diet has been linked to lower all-cause mortality in large cohorts.

These findings are scientifically relevant.

However, they do not mean:

Olive oil alone is proven to extend human life.

And they certainly do not mean:

The olive oil with the highest polyphenol count grants the most additional years of life.

Longevity results from a complex interplay of:

  • overall diet
  • physical activity
  • smoking or non-smoking
  • sleep
  • social relationships
  • body composition
  • medical care
  • environment
  • genetics
  • and numerous other factors

For Green Agora, it is particularly exciting that olive oil is simultaneously deeply rooted in the food culture of the Aegean.

On the Greek side, Ikaria is an intensively studied region of extraordinary longevity.

On the Turkish side, older people on Gökçeada were examined as part of the MEDIS research.

And from Muğla, there is scientific data on diet and telomere length in healthy people over 80 years of age.

In this guide, I therefore do not want to search for a miracle bottle.

I am interested in the larger question:

What does science actually show about olive oil, the Mediterranean diet, and healthy aging?

Olive oil and longevity | The most important answers first

Is higher olive oil consumption associated with lower mortality? Yes. Large prospective cohorts and meta-analyses show corresponding statistical correlations.
Does that prove that olive oil extends life? No. Observational studies show associations. Even after extensive statistical adjustments, residual bias cannot be completely ruled out.
What did the well-known US long-term study show? In 92,383 adults, the highest olive oil category of more than 7 g per day was associated with approximately 19 percent lower all-cause mortality compared to very rare or no consumption.
Is more olive oil always better? No. Dose-response meta-analyses do not show infinitely increasing statistical benefits. Olive oil also remains an energy-dense food.
Is swapping other fats interesting? Yes. In the US study, statistically replacing butter, margarine, mayonnaise, and dairy fat with olive oil was associated with lower mortality. This benefit was not observed compared to other vegetable oils as a whole.
Is the Mediterranean diet associated with healthy aging? Yes. Large meta-analyses in older adults show clear positive correlations with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. However, the vast majority of this evidence is observational.
Are Blue Zones proof of specific foods? No. Longevity regions are scientifically interesting, but do not allow for a causal attribution of their longevity to olive oil or any other single food.
Is high-phenolic olive oil automatically better for longevity? No. High polyphenol levels are analytically interesting. A clinically confirmed longevity ranking by mg/kg does not exist.
Is there an approved EU health claim? Yes. Under defined conditions, olive oil polyphenols may be associated with the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress. However, that is not a longevity claim.

The major US long-term study | 92,383 adults over up to 28 years

One of the most important investigations on the topic of olive oil and mortality was published in 2022 in the:

Journal of the American College of Cardiology

Two large American long-term cohorts were evaluated:

  • Nurses' Health Study
  • Health Professionals Follow-up Study

In total, the following were considered:

92,383 women and men

Of these, there were:

  • 60,582 women
  • 31,801 men

At the start of the study, there were no known cardiovascular diseases or cancers.

The diet was recorded again:

every four years

The maximum observation time was:

28 years.

During this time, the following were documented:

36,856 deaths

This makes the study one of the most significant sets of long-term data on olive oil consumption outside the traditional Mediterranean region.


What the study actually showed

The highest olive oil category examined was:

more than 7 g of olive oil per day.

This group was compared with individuals who consumed olive oil never or only very rarely.

After extensive statistical adjustment, higher olive oil consumption was associated with approximately:

  • 19 percent lower all-cause mortality
  • 19 percent lower cardiovascular mortality
  • 17 percent lower cancer mortality
  • 29 percent lower mortality from neurodegenerative diseases
  • 18 percent lower mortality from respiratory diseases

These are remarkable long-term associations.

Precisely because they appear so impressive, they must be interpreted correctly.


19 percent lower mortality does not mean 19 percent longer life

This distinction is crucial.

A:

19 percent lower relative risk of death within an observation

does not mean:

19 percent more years of life.

And it also does not mean:

everyone gains five or ten extra years by consuming half a tablespoon of olive oil daily.

Such a calculation would be scientifically incorrect.

Risk over an observation period and individual lifespan are different metrics.


Why this study still does not prove causation

The investigation was:

prospective and observational.

That is significantly stronger than a simple one-time survey.

The participants were followed for decades.

Diet was recorded repeatedly.

And numerous influencing factors were statistically taken into account.

These included, for example:

  • age
  • smoking
  • physical activity
  • body weight
  • total energy intake
  • other dietary characteristics
  • various health factors

This strengthens the meaningfulness.

However, it does not completely eliminate the problem of:

residual confounding.

People with higher olive oil consumption may also differ in characteristics that were not fully captured or corrected for.

The authors themselves explicitly acknowledged this limitation.

Therefore, the correct phrasing is:

Higher olive oil consumption was associated with lower mortality.

Not:

Olive oil was proven to cause an extension of life.


A particularly interesting finding | What was replaced by olive oil?

For me, the substitution analysis is one of the most interesting parts of this study.

The researchers statistically calculated what was associated with the risk of mortality when approximately:

10 g per day

of certain fat sources were replaced by the same amount of olive oil.

Replacing:

  • butter
  • margarine
  • mayonnaise
  • dairy fat

was associated with approximately:

8 to 34 percent lower mortality

depending on the endpoint.

In the statistical swap of:

other vegetable oils as a whole

for olive oil, however, no corresponding significant correlation was shown.

This is a very important differentiation.

The message is not:

Olive oil is superior to every other vegetable oil.

The more exciting question is:

Which fat source does olive oil replace within the total diet?


Meta-analyses confirm the positive correlation

The US cohorts are not alone.

A meta-analysis of prospective cohorts examined:

13 cohorts

regarding olive oil consumption.

Higher consumption compared to lower consumption was associated with:

  • approximately 15 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease
  • approximately 17 percent lower all-cause mortality

In the dose-response evaluation, every additional intake of:

5 g of olive oil per day

was statistically associated with a slightly lower risk.

However, the relationship was:

not linear.

Above approximately:

20 g per day

only little additional risk reduction was observed in this analysis.

This does not mean that 20 g is the optimal longevity dose.

It merely describes the pattern in the summarized observational data.


Even larger evidence base | More than 700,000 people for all-cause mortality

Another systematic review and meta-analysis on olive oil included data for all-cause mortality from:

733,420 participants

with:

174,081 deaths.

The investigation additionally considered:

  • cardiovascular diseases
  • cancer
  • type 2 diabetes
  • all-cause mortality

This large evidence base also supports the statement that olive oil consumption within dietary observations is associated with favorable health outcomes.

Here, too, observational data and intervention studies must be interpreted separately.


More olive oil does not automatically mean more longevity

Olive oil provides approximately:

9 kilocalories per gram.

An additional amount of:

50 g of olive oil

therefore corresponds to approximately:

450 kilocalories.

Anyone who simply consumes such amounts in addition to their previous diet changes their energy intake significantly.

Olive oil should therefore not be treated like a supplement that must be taken in the highest possible dose.

For me, the more sensible approach is:

Use olive oil as a high-quality fat source within an overall diet.

And also consider:

What is it replacing?

How much olive oil per day | Research and EU health claim


Mediterranean diet | The larger scientific story

Anyone who only looks at olive oil is likely looking at too small a slice of the picture.

The Mediterranean diet typically combines:

  • vegetables
  • fruit
  • legumes
  • whole grains
  • nuts and seeds
  • olive oil as a characteristic fat source
  • fish in varying amounts
  • other traditional foods
  • comparatively few highly processed products

Olive oil holds an important position in it.

But it is only one component of the overall pattern.


2024 | Mediterranean diet and mortality in 679,259 older adults

A large systematic review with meta-analysis examined the Mediterranean diet specifically in older adults.

Included were:

28 studies with a total of 679,259 participants.

Of these, there were:

  • 26 observational studies
  • 2 randomized studies

High adherence to a Mediterranean diet was associated in the overall result with approximately:

  • 23 percent lower all-cause mortality
  • 27 percent lower cardiovascular mortality

This is a strong positive long-term signal.

But here, too, the majority of the data comes from observational studies.

Therefore, the scientifically correct statement is:

High Mediterranean diet adherence was associated with more favorable long-term outcomes in older adults.

Not:

A Mediterranean diet guarantees additional years of life.


Polyphenol-rich diet and all-cause mortality | 178,657 adults

Polyphenols themselves have also been investigated in large long-term cohorts.

A meta-analysis published in 2024 included:

7 cohorts with a total of 178,657 adults.

A higher total polyphenol intake through the diet was associated in the pooled result with approximately:

7 percent lower all-cause mortality.

The hazard ratio was:

0.93.

This is a positive finding.

But again, the following applies:

People with high polyphenol intake often simultaneously eat:

  • more vegetables
  • more fruit
  • more legumes
  • more nuts
  • more plant-based foods overall

and may also differ in other lifestyle characteristics.

Therefore, it cannot be claimed:

Polyphenols are proven to extend life.


Blue Zones | Distinguishing popular term from scientific longevity research

The term:

Blue Zone

has become known worldwide.

In popular presentations, five regions are frequently mentioned:

  • Sardinia or Ogliastra in Italy
  • Ikaria in Greece
  • Okinawa in Japan
  • Nicoya in Costa Rica
  • Loma Linda in California

However, this popular list of five should not be equated with a completely uniform demographic validation.

Recent scientific reviews present a more nuanced picture.

A scoping review published in 2025 found:

varying levels of evidence between different regions referred to as Blue Zones.

Those particularly well-characterized included:

  • Ogliastra or parts of Sardinia
  • Okinawa
  • Nicoya

Scientific data regarding extraordinary longevity also exist for Ikaria.

For other popularly cited regions, the scientific data situation is different or less extensive.

Furthermore, another recent demographic publication is now also discussing:

Martinique

as a newly validated or emerging Longevity Blue Zone.

The term Blue Zones is therefore scientifically more dynamic than the well-known marketing list of five suggests.


Blue Zones are also being discussed critically in the scientific community

Extraordinary human longevity is demographically difficult to study.

Particularly important factors are:

  • accurate birth records
  • identity verification
  • death registers
  • migration
  • historical documentation
  • definition of geographical boundaries

In recent years, there has therefore been public and scientific debate regarding the reliability of individual longevity data.

In 2025, researchers published a detailed scientific response to this criticism, describing the document and age validation of established longevity zones.

For this Green Agora article, it does not follow that the entire concept should be dismissed.

But an important principle remains:

Blue Zones are interesting research regions – not a simple chain of evidence for a specific food.


What Blue Zones do not prove

Even if a region has an unusually high number of very old people, it cannot be directly concluded that:

This one food causes their longevity.

The dietary patterns of the various regions differ significantly in some cases.

For example, olive oil is:

not a traditional main fat in all popularly known Blue Zones.

Okinawa has a different traditional dietary culture than Ikaria.

Nicoya differs from Sardinia.

Loma Linda, in turn, has a specific religious and cultural context.

The common denominator is therefore not a particular bottle of olive oil.


Ikaria | A scientifically particularly interesting longevity region

Ikaria is located in the eastern Aegean.

The Greek island has been scientifically studied for years regarding extraordinary longevity.

Several studies focus on:

  • older residents
  • nutrition
  • physical activity
  • social structures
  • cardiovascular risk factors
  • psychological factors

A study of people aged:

at least 90 years

described, among other things:

  • strong family solidarity
  • frequent social contact
  • moderate to high physical activity for many participants

It is interesting that:

The Mediterranean diet was not the only particularly striking factor in this study.

The authors specifically described social structures and activity as notable characteristics.

This fits well with the idea that longevity arises from an entire living environment.


Olive oil on Ikaria | Part of the diet, not the sole explanation

Olive oil is part of the island's traditional diet.

Other Mediterranean foods and habits are also found there.

However, from the observation:

Olive oil is used on Ikaria and many people reach a ripe old age

it must not be concluded that:

People on Ikaria reach a ripe old age because of olive oil.

Completely different study designs would be required for that.


The Turkish Aegean | Scientifically interesting, but not a general Blue Zone

On the other side of the Aegean, Turkey also possesses a centuries-old olive and olive oil culture.

In many Aegean regions, the traditional cuisine includes:

  • olives
  • olive oil
  • vegetables
  • legumes
  • cereal products
  • yogurt
  • herbs
  • wild plants
  • fish and seafood in coastal regions

However, the Turkish Aegean should not be generally labeled a Blue Zone.

It lacks the corresponding demographic basis for this.

Nevertheless, various studies from the region are scientifically interesting.

Especially:

Gökçeada and Muğla.


Gökçeada | 55 older residents within the MEDIS research

Gökçeada is located in the northern Aegean and is historically also known as:

Imbros

The island is particularly interesting for this article because it was actually included in the:

Mediterranean Islands Study | MEDIS

In the study in question, a total of:

724 older adults between 65 and 100 years of age

from island regions of the eastern Aegean were examined.

This included people from:

  • Samothraki
  • Lesbos
  • Limnos
  • Ikaria
  • Kassos
  • Rhodes
  • Karpathos
  • Gökçeada

On Gökçeada, the following were included:

55 older residents of Greek descent

Specifically examined were:

  • lifestyle
  • diet
  • cardiometabolic risk factors

This makes Gökçeada a realistically studied Aegean population.

However, it does not automatically make the island a demographically validated Blue Zone.


What the Gökçeada data do not show

MEDIS did not investigate questions such as:

"How many additional years do people live on Gökçeada because of olive oil?"

The study examined the lifestyle and health characteristics of older residents.

It therefore cannot prove:

Olive oil causes extraordinary longevity on Gökçeada.

It is rather interesting that Gökçeada was studied scientifically alongside islands of the Greek Aegean.

This shows that this geographical space for nutrition and aging research does not necessarily end at a modern national border.


Muğla | 81 healthy people aged at least 80

Muğla is located in southwestern Turkey and is one of the traditional olive regions of the Aegean.

A scientific study published in 2023 examined:

81 healthy adults aged at least 80.

The study looked at:

  • dietary habits
  • body measurements
  • telomere length

The participants came from:

urban and rural regions.

The study also described the regional dietary culture.

High consumption was described for traditional foods such as:

  • olive oil
  • tarhana
  • bulgur
  • yogurt

In addition, the publication points to a great variety of edible wild herbs in the region.

Muğla is therefore an interesting example of how regional dietary traditions can be studied in healthy aging research.


Telomeres in Muğla | Interesting marker, but no proof for olive oil

Telomeres are located at the ends of chromosomes.

Their length is studied as one of several markers in biological aging research.

The Muğla study found various correlations between:

  • dietary habits
  • body measurements
  • telomere length

However, the study was:

cross-sectional.

This means:

People were not followed over decades with varying levels of olive oil consumption.

The study therefore cannot show:

Olive oil lengthened the telomeres.

And neither can it show:

Olive oil thereby extended life.


Ikaria, Gökçeada, and Muğla | Why I still find this Aegean comparison exciting

Greece and Turkey are two countries.

At the same time, the Aegean has formed a geographical and culinary space for thousands of years.

Olive trees, herbs, vegetables, and regional cooking traditions existed long before today's national borders.

On both sides, dietary cultures are found with:

  • olives and olive oil
  • legumes
  • vegetables
  • herbs
  • grains
  • traditional fermented foods
  • fish and seafood

This makes the Aegean fascinating from a nutritional science perspective.

The scientifically more exciting question for me is therefore not:

"Which food makes people a hundred years old?"

But rather:

"How do nutrition, exercise, family, social structures, environment, and culture interact over decades?"


Healthy aging and maximum lifespan are not the same

In aging research, a distinction is often made between:

Lifespan

and:

Healthspan

In simple terms:

Lifespan describes the length of life.

Healthspan describes the phase of life lived with good health and function for as long as possible.

Therefore, healthy aging includes more than just additional years of life.

Relevant factors include, for example:

  • mobility
  • muscle strength
  • independence
  • cognitive function
  • social participation
  • quality of life

For me, this is a more meaningful perspective than the search for a magic number of additional years.


What about telomeres?

Telomeres are scientifically interesting.

However, they are:

not a universal speedometer for biological age.

Their length is influenced by numerous factors.

Individual nutritional studies report correlations between dietary patterns and telomeres.

However, the available data do not allow for a serious statement that:

Olive oil keeps telomeres long and thereby extends life.


What about autophagy?

Autophagy is a natural cellular process in which damaged or no longer needed cell components are broken down or recycled.

Autophagy is one of the intensively researched mechanisms of aging.

Individual components of olives or olive oil are also being investigated for corresponding signaling pathways in:

  • cell models
  • animal models
  • mechanistic studies

That is biologically interesting.

But it does not prove clinical life extension through olive oil in humans.


What about mitochondria?

Mitochondria are central to the energy metabolism of human cells.

Changes in their function are among the:

Hallmarks of Aging.

Polyphenols are being investigated with regard to various mitochondrial processes.

However, between:

an effect in a cell or animal study

and:

a proven extension of human lifespan

lies a significant scientific gap.


Inflammation and oxidation markers | This is where real human research exists

Extra virgin olive oil and its phenolic compounds are also studied in randomized human trials.

In these, changes were observed in, among other things:

  • oxidized LDL
  • CRP
  • various cytokines
  • other oxidative or inflammation-related biomarkers

This is real human research.

But a biomarker is not yet proof that a human lives longer.

Therefore, it applies that:

Biomarker effect and life extension are two different levels of evidence.


Oleocanthal | Fascinating compound, but no proof of longevity

Oleocanthal is one of the best-known phenolic compounds in certain extra virgin olive oils.

It is being researched with regard to, among other things:

  • inflammatory signaling pathways
  • cellular stress
  • neurobiological mechanisms
  • other molecular processes

At Green Agora, individual products have exceptionally high documented oleocanthal levels.

This analysis is remarkable.

But:

There is no clinical human study from which we could derive that:

The higher the oleocanthal, the longer the human life.

Understanding oleocanthal in premium olive oil


Is there an optimal polyphenol value for longevity?

No.

There is no scientifically recognized value such as:

500 mg/kg = good for longevity.

Or:

1,000 mg/kg = especially life-extending.

Or:

2,000 mg/kg = twice the effect.

A total polyphenol value describes:

an analytical property of a specific sample.

It does not describe:

additional years of life.


The approved EU Health Claim | A strong positive statement with a clear boundary

For certain olive oils, there is an expressly approved health claim.

The official wording is:

"Olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress."

The claim may only be used for an olive oil that contains at least:

5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives (e.g., oleuropein complex and tyrosol) per 20 g of olive oil

For the claim to be permissible, consumers must be informed that the positive effect is achieved with a daily intake of:

20 g of olive oil

This is a concrete and expressly approved positive health claim.

However, it relates exclusively to:

the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress.


The EU Health Claim is not a longevity claim

The approved claim says nothing about olive oil:

  • extending life
  • lowering biological age
  • lengthening telomeres
  • clinically activating autophagy
  • preventing dementia
  • preventing cancer
  • preventing heart attacks
  • slowing down aging

These statements must not be constructed from the polyphenol claim.

EU Health Claim for Olive Oil | Requirements and Laboratory Testing


Total polyphenols and claim-relevant compounds | Not automatically the same

This distinction is also crucial for this article.

A laboratory value of:

2081 mg of analyzed total phenols per kg

does not automatically mean that every component of this total is:

a claim-relevant hydroxytyrosol or a corresponding derivative.

The statement depends on:

  • which compounds were measured
  • which method was used for the measurement
  • which sample was tested
  • which harvest or batch it corresponds to
  • when it was analyzed

Total polyphenol value and EU health claim evidence must therefore be considered separately.

There is no proven "longevity olive oil."

  • producer
  • harvest
  • freshness
  • sensory profile
  • current analytical data
  • packaging
  • personal use

A high polyphenol value can be a very interesting additional product characteristic.

However, it is not a clinical life-extension scale.


How much olive oil should you eat for a long life?

There is:

no scientifically established longevity dose.

In the large US cohort, statistical correlations were observed even with moderate amounts.

Other Mediterranean diet studies use significantly larger quantities.

At the same time, the dose-response meta-analysis indicates that statistical risk reductions do not continue to increase indefinitely with quantity.

More is therefore not automatically better.

The appropriate amount depends on the entire diet.


20 g of olive oil daily | No longevity dose

The number:

20 g per day

has a clear regulatory context for olive oil.

It is one of the conditions of the authorized EU health claim for olive oil polyphenols.

It is not a clinically defined dosage for life extension.

Therefore, one should not conclude from these 20 g that:

"Whoever eats 20 g of high-quality olive oil daily will live longer."


Do you have to drink olive oil pure for potential benefits?

No.

The major nutritional studies do not require a morning olive oil ritual.

Olive oil can simply be a normal part of a meal.

For example, with:

  • vegetables
  • salads
  • legumes
  • fish
  • potatoes
  • whole grain products
  • Mediterranean or Aegean dishes

Traditional Mediterranean cuisine treats olive oil primarily as food – not as a liquid capsule.


Must high-quality olive oil be used exclusively raw?

No.

Extra virgin olive oil can be used:

cold

as well as for:

numerous normal applications in hot cooking.

Heat can change individual:

  • aroma compounds
  • phenolic compounds
  • other ingredients

This does not mean that premium olive oil generally cannot be heated.

Oils with particularly strong character can additionally be used as a finish.

What likely influences healthy aging more than a single bottle of olive oil

Anyone who studies longevity from a scientific perspective keeps coming to a similar conclusion.

There is no single "magic bullet."

Important factors include, among others:

  • not smoking
  • regular physical activity
  • sufficient sleep
  • maintaining muscle mass and strength
  • a high-quality diet
  • appropriate energy intake
  • blood pressure and metabolic control
  • social relationships
  • mental activity
  • medical check-ups

A Mediterranean or plant-based diet with high-quality olive oil can fit excellently into this overall picture.

It does not replace the overall picture.


What we should not claim scientifically

Based on current evidence, it cannot be claimed for any Green Agora olive oil that:

  • it extends life
  • it grants a certain number of additional years
  • it prevents age-related diseases
  • it prevents cancer
  • it prevents dementia
  • it protects against heart attacks
  • it lengthens telomeres
  • it activates life-extending autophagy
  • it verifiably slows down biological aging

Such statements go beyond scientific evidence and authorized health claims.


What we can say positively, on the other hand

Scientific precision does not mean that one has to hide positive results.

We can clearly state:

  • Large prospective long-term studies link higher olive oil consumption to lower all-cause mortality.
  • In the well-known US cohort, consumption of more than 7 g per day was associated with approximately 19 percent lower all-cause mortality compared to rare consumption.
  • Statistically replacing butter, margarine, mayonnaise, and dairy fat with olive oil was associated with more favorable mortality outcomes.
  • Meta-analyses of prospective cohorts confirm an inverse relationship between olive oil consumption and all-cause mortality.
  • In large meta-analyses, Mediterranean diet is associated with lower all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in older adults.
  • In a meta-analysis of 178,657 adults, a higher total polyphenol intake was associated with lower all-cause mortality.
  • Ikaria is a scientifically intensely studied region of extraordinary longevity.
  • Gökçeada was indeed studied within the MEDIS research on older people in the eastern Aegean.
  • Muğla possesses current research on diet and telomere length in healthy people over 80.
  • For suitable olive oils, there is an authorized EU health claim for protecting blood lipids from oxidative stress.

This is already a strong scientific story.

We do not need to turn it into a miracle claim.

The topic of longevity interests me personally very much.

And the Aegean interests me in particular.

If you only look at a political map, you see:

Greece on one side.

Turkey on the other.

But when you visit olive groves, get to know producers, walk through markets, and look at the cuisine, you recognize many connections.

Olive trees know no national borders.

Many nutritional traditions are also older than these borders.

Ikaria is scientifically interesting due to extraordinary longevity.

Gökçeada was studied together with Greek islands within the MEDIS research.

And in Muğla, researchers studied how diet, body measurements, and telomere length are related in healthy people over 80.

That fascinates me.

But I do not want to create a story out of it that says:

"The people there get old because they drink high-phenolic olive oil."

We don't know that.

If someone asks me:

"Ayhan, which olive oil lets me live longer?"

I cannot present them with a scientifically serious bottle.

But I can explain to them:

  • which olive variety is in the bottle
  • where the olives grew
  • when they were harvested
  • how the oil was produced
  • what it tastes like
  • what current analysis exists
  • which phenolic compounds have been documented
  • what research actually shows about olive oil and Mediterranean diet

And that is precisely where the strength of Green Agora lies for me.

Olive oil and longevity | Frequently asked questions

Can olive oil extend life?

Large observational studies show a correlation between higher olive oil consumption and lower all-cause mortality. However, they do not prove that olive oil alone extends individual lifespan.

What did the large US study show?

Among 92,383 adults, the highest olive oil category of more than 7 g per day was associated with approximately 19 percent lower all-cause mortality over an observation period of up to 28 years compared to rare or no consumption.

Does 19 percent lower mortality mean 19 percent more lifespan?

No. A relative risk of mortality during a study cannot be directly converted into additional individual years of life.

Is 7 g of olive oil per day a recommended longevity dose?

No. More than 7 g per day was merely the highest consumption category in the US observational study.

Is 20 g of olive oil a longevity dose?

No. The 20 g are part of the conditions of the EU Health Claim for olive oil polyphenols and are not a dosage for life extension.

Is more olive oil automatically better?

No. Dose-response meta-analyses show no unlimited increasing statistical benefits. Furthermore, olive oil provides a lot of energy.

Is it better to replace butter with olive oil?

In the large US cohort, the statistical replacement of butter, margarine, mayonnaise, and milk fat with olive oil was associated with lower mortality. This is an observational finding and not an individual guarantee.

Is olive oil better than any other vegetable oil?

This cannot be derived from the US study. When comparing olive oil with other vegetable oils as a whole, there was no corresponding significant mortality benefit found there.

Is a Mediterranean diet associated with a longer life?

A high adherence to a Mediterranean diet is associated with lower overall and cardiovascular mortality in large meta-analyses of older adults. The evidence is predominantly observational.

What are Blue Zones?

The term refers to regions or communities associated with exceptional longevity. Popular accounts frequently mention Sardinia, Ikaria, Okinawa, Nicoya, and Loma Linda. However, the scientific demographic evidence is not entirely consistent across these regions.

Is Ikaria a scientifically studied longevity region?

Yes. On Ikaria, exceptionally old populations as well as diet, activity, social structures, and health factors have been studied in several research projects.

Is Gökçeada a Blue Zone?

Gökçeada is not among the established classic demographic longevity Blue Zones. However, older residents of the island were studied as part of the MEDIS research alongside residents of various Greek islands.

What was studied on Gökçeada?

55 older residents of Greek descent on Gökçeada were included in a MEDIS study with a total of 724 older adults from the eastern Aegean. Factors such as lifestyle and cardiometabolic risk factors were examined, among others.

Is Muğla a Blue Zone?

No. Muğla is not a demographically established Blue Zone. Nevertheless, the region is interesting due to its traditional diet and current research involving older people.

What did the Muğla study show?

Diet, body measurements, and telomere length were examined in 81 healthy individuals aged at least 80 years. The study was cross-sectional and does not prove a life-extending effect of individual foods.

Does olive oil play a role in the traditional diet of Muğla?

Yes. The scientific publication describes olive oil, alongside tarhana, bulgur, yogurt, and other traditional foods, as being consumed frequently. This does not result in a causal longevity effect.

Does olive oil lengthen telomeres?

Such a general effect is not proven. Telomeres are influenced by numerous biological and lifestyle factors.

Does olive oil activate autophagy?

Components of olive oil are being studied in experimental models regarding autophagy signaling pathways. No proven life extension in humans can be derived from this.

Is oleocanthal a longevity substance?

Oleocanthal is a biologically interesting phenolic compound. However, there is no clinical evidence suggesting that a higher oleocanthal content extends human lifespan.

Are many polyphenols good for longevity?

A higher total polyphenol intake through diet was associated with lower overall mortality in a meta-analysis. No longevity effect of a specific high-phenolic olive oil can be derived from this.

Is Pamako Gold Organic with 2081 mg/kg a longevity olive oil?

No. 2081 mg/kg of analyzed total phenols is an exceptional current product characteristic. No life extension can be derived from this.

What does the EU Health Claim say?

Under legal requirements, it may be stated: "Olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress." The claim contains no statement about longevity.

Does olive oil have to be drunk pure?

No. Olive oil can be part of normal meals. No morning drinking ritual is required for health or scientific categorization.
